🧠 DEMENTIA: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) Dr. Pratik Babel | Neurologist | PCMC Are you noticing memory loss or changes in behaviour in an elderly family member? Here are some common questions about dementia. ❓ 1. What is dementia? Dementia is a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, language, judgement and the ability to perform daily activities. It is not a normal part of ageing. ❓ 2. Is forgetting things a normal part of ageing? Occasionally forgetting names or misplacing objects can occur with ageing. However, repeatedly asking the same questions, getting lost in familiar places or struggling with routine tasks needs medical evaluation. ❓ 3. What are the early warning signs of dementia? 🔹 Frequent memory lapses 🔹 Difficulty finding familiar words 🔹 Confusion about time or place 🔹 Difficulty managing money or medicines 🔹 Changes in mood, personality or behaviour 🔹 Difficulty performing familiar daily activities ❓ 4. What is the most common cause of dementia? Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause. Other causes include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. ❓ 5. Can dementia be cured? Most degenerative dementias do not yet have a cure. However, appropriate treatment, lifestyle measures and caregiver support can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Some conditions that mimic dementia, such as vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disorders and certain medication effects, may be treatable. ❓ 6. How is dementia diagnosed? A neurologist may recommend: ✔️ Detailed history and cognitive assessment ✔️ Neurological examination ✔️ Blood tests, including thyroid function and vitamin B12 when indicated ✔️ MRI brain or other investigations, depending on the clinical findings ❓ 7. Can dementia be prevented? Not all cases can be prevented, but maintaining physical activity, controlling blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, avoiding smoking, treating hearing loss and staying socially and mentally active may help reduce risk. ❓ 8. When should you consult a neurologist? Seek evaluation if memory problems are progressively worsening or interfering with daily life. Sudden confusion or an abrupt change in mental status requires urgent medical assessment. ❤️ Early evaluation matters. Do not dismiss persistent memory loss as simply old age. 📍 Consult Dr. Pratik Babel, Neurologist For neurological consultation in PCMC and surrounding areas. 📞 For appointments, contact the clinic. #DementiaAwareness #MemoryLoss #AlzheimersDisease #Neurologist #DrPratikBabel #PCMC #PimpriChinchwad #BrainHealth #HealthyAgeing
